Émile Boucher and Tango: When Experience Meets Instinct (And a Little Softness)

In a criminal investigation, people often think of desk work, file analysis, and intense interrogations. But out in the field, there are teammates of a whole different category who completely change the game: K-9 handlers and their four-legged partners.

After introducing you to Morgane last week, I wanted to take you behind the scenes of another essential duo in Shadows of Dubai: Émile and Tango.

A SQ Veteran and His Faithful Accomplice

Émile isn't a cop like any other. He’s a retired Sûreté du Québec K-9 handler. A solid guy, weathered by years of service, who has seen his share of difficult scenes. By his side for the past 8 years is Tango, his canine partner. At this stage, Tango is no wild young pup: he's a seasoned veteran with infallible field experience and a bond with his handler that borders on telepathy.

When writing a thriller, integrating a duo like this brings realism and formidable efficiency to search operations. They understand each other in a split second; a single look is enough.

From Reality to Fiction (Or the Inspiration Behind the Character)

Creating Tango didn't require much distant research: it’s a direct nod and a huge thank you to my own muse, Deejay (my magnificent 3-year-old Rottweiler who never leaves my side when I’m writing). Her constant presence, loyalty, and zen attitude (most of the time, lol) inspire me every day. Without her, the soul of this duo simply wouldn't have the same depth.

In Shadows of Dubai, Émile and Tango remind us that the strength of a team lies not only in skills, but also in heart.

Do you know where this duo comes from? For Émile, I wanted a character who embodies stability in the midst of chaos. The choice of the K-9 handler is no accident: it’s a partnership based on absolute, visceral trust that you don't find anywhere else. Tango isn't just a working tool; he's an extension of Émile's soul, his moral compass in the darkest moments of the investigation.
