When we think of detective novels or thrillers, we often picture the dark alleys of a sprawling metropolis, a snowy northern village, or a dreary police station. So, why set the plot of Shadows of Dubai in this ultra-modern city carved out of the desert?
First small confession: I’ve never set foot in Dubai in my life! But when you've spent years immersed in investigations and the inner workings of crime, the perfect setting is built first between your ears (and through meticulous research, let's admit it!).
Why this choice? It’s that paradox between the flashy and the shadowy that gives the novel its unique flavor and drives the suspense.
Dubai is the showcase of absolute luxury, dizzying skyscrapers, and sheer excess. But what fascinates me isn't what shines—it's what hides just beneath the surface. Behind the gleaming veneer lurk tightly guarded secrets and power plays where justice has to navigate a very complex terrain.
With my academic and professional background, I wanted to explore this duality: the heat of the desert combined with the calculated coldness of criminals.
Have you ever had the feeling that a magnificent place was hiding a much darker underside?
