Creating a Team of Characters: A Matter of Synergy and Complicity

With nearly twenty years of career at the Sûreté du Québec, I've had the opportunity to observe fascinating human dynamics. But to shape the characters in my thrillers, I didn't try to apply some magic formula: I simply started from my own favorites as a reader and a die-hard fan of police procedural series. Far from clichés, here is how I chose to build my team, balancing complementarity, synergy, and shared moments of glory.

Drawing Inspiration From One's Own Favorites

To shape my team, I leaned into diversity: different styles, varied backgrounds, generations intersecting. I wanted every reader to find a resonance, to grow attached to one or another, or simply to appreciate the contrasts between them.

There was another major challenge: I didn't want my characters to be police officers. Yet, I still needed to find the right angle, the proper approach to make their actions and reasoning credible. That is where my own background helped me anchor their actions in reality, so that readers would believe it from start to finish.

But the heart of the project—what mattered to me above all else—was their synergy as the plot unfolds. For Shadows of Dubai, I wanted to explore a team dynamic where everyone contributes rather than resting everything on the shoulders of a single character.

Giving Everyone Their Space

One of the greatest comments I’ve received so far, and one that touched me straight to the heart, was hearing: "It feels like we're part of the team." That is precisely the immersion I was looking for.

I also loved reading feedback from readers who appreciated that each of my characters got their moment of glory. It is precisely because of the group's complementarity, and everyone's strengths and flaws, that the investigation moves forward between Montreal and Dubai.

Writing is also about this: weaving a living group, where each piece of the puzzle finds its true light at the right moment.
